Today in Heritage History, March 18, 1532, the English Parliament bars payments by the Church of England, to Rome. When word reached Pope Clement VII he immediately dispatched Ray Liotta, Robert DeNiro, Joe Pesci, Luca Brasi de Medici, and a contingent of other de Medici family members to pay a “cordial, and social but persuasive visit” to Church of England authorities. At the Pope’s direction, they explained that without continued payments any protection “afforded” neighborhood fish and chip stands in the Italian neighborhoods of London would cease immediately and “get very interesting” (knee caps and organ pipes discussed). The Church of England eventually recanted and continued the payments but pledged to expose Rome’s tactics in a Mario Puzo novel in 4000 years.

I have read that another cause Reformation esp England and Germany is that papal tribute demanded sucked up too much money disallowing economies to expand with the rise of the small business middle class as well as a serious drain on royal coffers.
