Today in Heritage History, May 4, 1946, 5 die in a two-day riot at Alcatraz prison in San Francisco Bay, California. Guards reported that the riot began as a result of disagreements between feuding factions of the prison population about decorations, mirror ball styles, corsages or nosegays, and who got to bring Geoff “Sweet Cheeks” McMurphy, for the annual Alcatraz Prison Prom.
