Today in Heritage History, July 14, 1996, Thousand Clowns opens at the Criterion Theater in New York City for 32 performances. New York City Police officers were called to duty for all the performances needing to direct thousands away. The theater marquee had attracted tourists from all over the U.S. who assumed they were attending the 1996 National Republican Convention.
