Today in Heritage History, 1820, Antarctica is discovered by Nathaniel B. Palmer while exploring the region aboard his ship the Hero, a 47′ sloop. The discovery was named on a map by Scottish cartographer John George Bartholomew. He named it “Antarctica” from the Romanized version of the Greek word Antarktikos. The word was used by Palmer himself in his exploration journal entries and translates into English to mean, “Holy shit!..that iceberg’s the size of a fucking continent!”.
