Today in Heritage History, 1820, Missouri imposes a $1 Bachelor Tax on unmarried men between the ages of 21 and 50. Of little known historical fact, almost all of the Bachelor Taxes were paid on behalf of the unmarried men 21 to 50, by wives of the married men in Missouri ages 21 to 50. This was also the same group of Missouri women who gave Missouri its nickname; “The Show Me State”. These two previously unrelated facts solves the historical conundrum of what specifically Missourians are always asking to be shown.
