Today in Heritage History, 1896, after the territory formally promised the Federal government that it would follow the Mormon’s pledge to abandon polygamy, Utah was admitted as the 45th state. Only two weeks later however, after thoroughly examining the Federal governments formal requirements to become a state, and the Federal laws they would be required to follow, Utah quickly withdrew their request. Territory officials said they would actually be “better off married to 18 nagging , demanding, bickering wives, all with PMS at the same time”, rather than comply with,”all the necessary bullshit to be a state”.
