Today in Heritage History, 1831, newlyweds Mr. and Mrs. Pierson of Charleston, South Carolina, are the first couple in the U.S. to take a Honeymoon trip by railroad. The marriage abruptly ended however before the trip was completed. As Mr. Pierson left the Honeymoon Suite for the Food Car to pick-up their marriage night dinner of roller hot dogs, cold french fries, five day old popcorn and flat soda, he thought he had mistakenly heard the Conductor announce that all train staff are “now boarding Mrs. Pierson in the Honeymoon Suite”. As he returned with their dinner to find that his hearing was not mistaken, Mrs. Pierson’s only explanation was that she was always, “just a sucker for men in uniform”.
