Today in Heritage History, 1992, The IRS and Willie Nelson settle their tax evasion case for a negotiated settlement amount of $9 million rather than the $16.7 million the IRS claimed was owed by the government. The settlement was structured so that Nelson paid (only) $1 to the IRS and $8,999,999 worth of marijuana to the Tax Auditors Afternoon Break Fund. Nelson was reportedly happy with the arrangement as both his own future audits as well as other tax payer audits decreased over the next decade by 99%.
