Today in Heritage History, March 6, 1831, Edgar Allen Poe is involuntarily removed as a cadet at West Point. Poe began to attract negative attention at the Academy after spending hours in his room teaching his pet raven to bugle Taps. He was eventually asked to leave after admitting he was responsible for putting the suggestion in the campus suggestion box detailing how a swinging ax pendulum would be a great idea to “speed-up the cry babies” on the West Point cadet obstacle course.
