Today in Heritage History, April 2, 1995, the New York Police Department and the New York Transit Authority merge to become one organization. The merger was completed under authority of the Federal Paperwork Reduction Act as a courtesy to residents of all the boroughs of New York. Members of the Mafia, shop owners, racket-runners, and illegal gambling operators paying-off either organization, could now (conveniently) write only one check.
