Today in Heritage History, May 1, 1844, Samuel Morse sends his first telegraph message. Morse’s’ original code called for short tones to be referred to as “tits” and longer tones to “ah-ha-ha’s”. The first reported test of the code caused Morse to re-think his choices as rescuers who received an “S.O.S.” (tits-tits-tits-ah-ha-ha-tits-tits-tits) rushed to the nearest topless bar rather than to assist the sinking ship at sea. It was not until after several failed rescue attempts and multiple drownings, that later in 1844, Morse changed his terms to “dit’s” and “dah’s”.
