Today in Heritage History, June 29, 1891, the National Forest Service is launched. Congress pushed to close down the Service the very next year after making its first annual report to a Congressional Oversight Committee. The Committee was distraught over the fact that during the report the Service told Congress that it had determined that a tree did make a noise in the forest even if no one was there to hear it, no matter what Congress said.
