Today in Heritage History, July 9, 1893, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams performs the worlds first successful open-heart surgery without anesthesia. Mrs. Hale told reporters she didn’t remember giving her husband permission to perform the operation on her. But she did acknowledge in his defense, to having short-term memory problems since agreeing to allow him to perform the world’s first lobotomy on her,¬†without anesthesia.
