Today in Heritage History, August 9, 1944, Smokey Bear is first publicized on posters for a United States Forest Service consumer awareness campaign. After extensive test marketing, consumer groups consistently picked Smokey as their preferred branding image for the USFS over their other possible choices of the Pyromaniac Puma, the Match Happy Hippo, and the Frivolous Forest Firing Ferret.
