Today in Heritage History, August 17, 1953, the first Narcotics Anonymous meeting is held in Southern California. Struggling to initially define the anonymous charge of their mission, groups first required attendees to wear masks of Looney Tunes characters in order to protect their anonymity. Unable to hold an hour-long meeting as a result of the interruptions of raucous laughter from the marijuana addicts, and ear-piercing screams from the LSD users, the groups eventually decided to re-think their approach (2009).
